A small barn house in Woodstock | Small House Bliss

The idea of living in a converted barn holds a lot of romantic appeal for many people. The problem from a small-house perspective is that most barns are pretty big. However this 100-year-old barn t…Built in the 1920’s, the barn features wide-plank wood floors and hand-hewn beams. The entire ground floor is an open-plan living space. The original barn doors were replaced by a pair of French doors giving a view of farm fields with the Catskill Mountains in the distance.

Cape Cod Cottage

tiny-cape-cod-cottage-exterior3-via-smallhouseblissThis little cottage sits near Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts. In winter, when the leaves have fallen, you can view the bay through the trees. We don’t know how old the cottage is, but it did belong to the current owner’s grandparents. It was, however, recently renovated, so the interior is up-to-date while still in keeping with the age and character of the cottage.

The cottage started out as a high post half Cape. Typical Cape Cod houses are categorized as quarter, half, three-quarter or full Cape, depending on the number of windows along the front. Often a young family would start by building a half Cape, with two windows on one side of the front door, and later expand it to a three-quarter or full Cape with either one or two windows on the other side of the door.tiny-cape-cod-cottage-dining1-via-smallhousebliss tiny-cape-cod-cottage-kitchen1-via-smallhouseblissThis one was expanded more haphazardly though, with a shed-roofed addition at one end for the living room and a hip-roofed addition at the other end containing the bathroom. There is also a storage shed stuck to the back side. The kitchen and dining room are in the original cottage. That oldest part is dressed up with built-up crown moldings along the roof eaves together with gable end cornice returns. The additions are much plainer, trimmed out with flat fascia boards.tiny-cape-cod-cottage-kitchen2-via-smallhousebliss tiny-cape-cod-cottage-living-via-smallhousebliss

The term “high post” refers to walls that extend vertically above the lower-level ceiling, increasing the usable space upstairs. This one also has two large dormers, likely newer additions, which raise the ceiling to at least 7′ over most of the upper floor. That gives room for a relatively spacious bedroom suite including a half bath.

Kevin Fowler’s Rustic Ranch | Wimberley, Texas

Kevin Fowler’s Rustic Ranch from Altared Weddings on Vimeo.

What started as a hobby evolved into what you see today at the Ranch. Outside of the normal routine of touring and writing music, Kevin collects and restores buildings that have a unique history. Each structure has been carefully crafted back to a state which honors its history and location. Everything on the Ranch has a story that we are anxious to tell people about. We stay busy making sure that bits of history don’t get lost to a landfill and in the process give something back to everybody that comes through our gates. It’s this level of care that ensures that each person we get to share this with walks away with a personal experience that can’t be found anywhere else in the Hill Country. That’s why we tell people that we are real Texas country.

“Kevin Fowler never ceases to amaze us… it became clear that his passion for music and historic buildings have collided in a new project that folks in Central Texas will no doubt be crazy about.” – Sandra Greaney, Country Line Magazine

“All these buildings roughly surround the intended site of the marriage ceremonies, smartly positions in a natural amphitheater of sorts.  Was it ever intended to be a fans-only business? ‘No.  It’s for everybody.’”    –  Houston Press

“It’s a perfect representation of an old rustic Texas ranch. The location is a peaceful country setting…NO highway noise. Guaranteed to have beautiful hill country sunsets. Unending opportunities for photography. A fantastic place for weddings or just about any other gathering you might have. This place is really AWESOME!”         – Wimberley View

For the Texas belle who prefers a little glamour with her grit, a rustic wedding without some sophisticated sparkle simply will not do…the concept was fittingly brought to life at country crooner Kevin Fowler’s Rustic Ranch. Dotted with sprawling centuries-old oaks and outlined by Loneman Creek, the newly opened 130-acre ranch is home to a 19th-century cabin, a restored farmhouse, and an authentic Texas dancehall that calls for a twirl-worthy dress…”  –  Lauren Kathryn, Swooned Magazine

Name: Natalie Pollard, owner of Villagers, and cat Melon Location: Candler, North Carolina Size: 265 square feet Years lived in: 6 months Natalie’s home may only be eight feet wide, but it is packed with inspiring design details and unexpected features for a tiny home including a large side entrance, a central bedroom loft, and the creative use of heirloom furniture pieces to contribute to that familiar feeling of home. She worked with the designers at Nanostead to create the 265 square foot portable home with the features that were important to her—mostly lots of windows for natural light—and the result is one of the sweetest small homes you will ever see.13 natalie's house tour_IMG_166605 natalie's tiny home_IMG_140114 natalie's house tour_IMG_167809 kitty_IMG_166927 natalie's house tour_IMG_156931 natalie's house tour_IMG_162912 natalie's house tour_IMG_165408b natalie's house tour_IMG_1798

A DIY Self-Sustainable Micro-Cabin in California

Cabin in the woods, tiny homes, small cabins, mountain life, off grid living

Tim Eddy and Hannah Fuller: Tahoe, California Size: 196 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years; Owned Hannah grew up in a home her parents built (her father is a boat builder), so it was only natural for her to follow in their footsteps. Tim, on the other hand, has never built anything but fires. With that in mind, Tim and Hannah started out with 20 acres of land and no blueprints, and built one of the most impressive houses I've ever seen in my life — not to mention it's fully off-the-grid.
